Tandem Diabetes Faces Key Earnings Test as Pharmacy Strategy Takes Center Stage

Tandem Diabetes Care Inc. is scheduled to release its second-quarter earnings after the closing bell on Thursday, with investors closely monitoring how the insulin pump manufacturer is managing its transition to a pharmacy-based business model.

Wall Street expects the company to report a loss of $0.33 per share on revenue of $255.1 million, reflecting approximately 6% year-over-year revenue growth. Sales are projected to improve from the $247.2 million reported in the first quarter, although the expected loss is slightly wider than the $0.30 per share deficit recorded previously. In the last quarter, Tandem exceeded analysts' expectations for both revenue and earnings.

Analyst sentiment remains balanced. Of the 23 analysts covering the stock, 12 recommend buying, while 11 suggest holding. The average price target stands at $28.53, implying roughly 41% upside from the current share price of $20.20. However, some firms have recently lowered their targets, including UBS, which reduced its target from $22 to $18, and Mizuho, which trimmed its forecast from $24 to $20.

During the past two months, earnings estimates have risen modestly by 2.1%, while revenue forecasts have remained largely unchanged, signaling cautious confidence in the company's near-term outlook.

Key Areas of Focus

Investors will primarily be looking for updates on Tandem's shift from its traditional durable medical equipment (DME) model to a pay-as-you-go pharmacy model. Management believes the transition could significantly improve long-term economics by increasing revenue per patient, expanding access to its products, and reducing quarterly revenue swings.

At the same time, the transition introduces execution risks. Because insulin pumps are increasingly being subsidized to support pharmacy adoption, pump shipments may remain under pressure for some time. Analysts will watch closely for updates on patient adoption and the pace of migration from the DME model.

Profitability will also be under the spotlight. Tandem has shown signs of recovery after facing competition from Insulet's Omnipod 5, supported by its Mobi insulin pump and stronger direct-sales pricing. With a 54.9% gross margin and 33.6% operating income growth over the past year, investors want to see whether the company can continue improving profitability during the business transition.

International expansion could provide additional momentum. Tandem recently secured CE Mark approval in Europe for automated insulin delivery systems designed for Type 2 diabetes patients and Type 1 diabetes during pregnancy, potentially opening new growth opportunities.

As demand for automated insulin delivery systems continues to rise worldwide, Thursday's earnings report may provide important insight into whether Tandem can successfully capitalize on industry growth while executing its long-term strategy.
