Trump Signals Hormuz Shipping Deal May Be Days Away as US-Iran Talks Advance

U.S. President Donald Trump said a breakthrough agreement on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could be reached as soon as Wednesday, expressing optimism that negotiations with Iran are making significant progress.

Speaking to reporters in Los Angeles, Trump said a deal "could happen tomorrow or the next day," adding that discussions with Tehran are "moving along very nicely" and that more clarity is expected within the next 48 hours.

According to reports, the United States, Iran, and Oman are working on a 60-day interim agreement aimed at restoring safe navigation through the strategic waterway. Under the proposed arrangement, ships entering the Gulf would travel through a northern shipping lane near Iran, while outbound vessels would pass through Omani waters in coordination with Iranian authorities.

The temporary framework reportedly would not impose transit fees or tolls. It also includes cooperation between Iran and Oman to remove naval mines from the central shipping lane, paving the way for the eventual restoration of two-way maritime traffic.

However, Iranian state television struck a more cautious tone, citing a source familiar with the discussions who said any agreement between Tehran and Muscat would not automatically result in the immediate reopening of the strait. The source added that implementation would depend on what Iran described as a change in U.S. policy.
