Citadel Posts Strong July Gain After Discounted Purchase of Situational Awareness Assets
Citadel's flagship Wellington hedge fund gained 5.9% in July, benefiting from its acquisition of a large portion of the publicly traded assets held by troubled AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness at a discounted price.
The transaction significantly boosted Citadel's monthly performance, lifting its year-to-date return to 12%, according to a person familiar with the matter. Before completing the deal, the fund had gained only 0.45% during most of July.
The agreement came after Situational Awareness, founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, faced mounting losses as the technology rally lost momentum. The fund, which once managed $45 billion in assets, was forced to sell holdings after lenders issued margin calls tied to its highly leveraged positions.
Citadel reportedly moved quickly, negotiating the transaction in less than 24 hours and purchasing most of the fund's publicly listed portfolio at roughly a 10% discount. The deal helped stabilize markets, easing concerns over a broader liquidation of AI-related investments.
The acquisition also marked another successful distressed-asset investment for Citadel, following earlier market volatility linked to geopolitical tensions that had weighed on some of the firm's trading strategies.
Meanwhile, the fallout from Situational Awareness continues to affect the investment community. The fund counted several prominent investors among its backers and maintained relationships with major Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America, which acted as prime brokers.
The broader technology selloff also hurt several AI-focused hedge funds. Whale Rock Capital Management's flagship fund declined 21.7% in July, while Point72 Asset Management's Turion Fund fell 11.4%, reflecting the sharp correction across AI-related stocks.
